PERSONAL.

A Sydney Sun London cable announces the death of Mauser, the inventor of the Mauser rifle. His many friends will be pleased to hear that Mr H. C. Collinson, senr., showed slight improvement last evening. Dr. Alexander Grahame, of WaiUouaiti, died suddenly at his residence at 4 o'clock on Sunday morning. It appears that he rose during the night to take some mixture of bromide, and must have swallowed an overdose. He was a married man, 42 years of age. There is at present in Palmerston on a visit to his son, Mr John Sullivan, who was one of four white men who helped the late Mr Stuart to survey Palmerston nearly 50 years ago. At that time there was not a vestige of a house. A remarkable thing is that this is Mr Sullivan's first visit since then. Among the passengers who arrived from London by the Rotorua yesterday were Capt. C. R. Macdonald, of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment, and Capt. Gibbon, of the Royal Irish Fusiliers, both of whom were accompanied by their wives and families. Capt. Macdonald will succeed Lieut.Colonel Braithwaite (who has been appointed Chief of the General Staff, in succession to Colonel Heard) as General Staff Officer for Auckland military district. Capt. Gibbon will replace Lieut.-Colonel Cochrane who ha 3 gone to England) as Director of Military Operations.—Association.
