TARAXAKI TIMBER WORKERS' AWARD. Press Association. —By Telegraph. NEW PLYMOUTH, May 28. After two days' sitting the Conciliation Council fixed an award for Taranaki timber workers. It is the first award to be made in the district for bush sawmills. The minimum wages are fixed at ordinary rates for not more than 94 hours a fortnight for bush mills; the head benchman who keeps the saws is to get Is fid per ! hour and the benchnmn who does not Is 3d per hour; first break-down man, Is 5d per hour; second break-down man, Is 2d per hour; tailer-out, Is 2d per hour; head yardman (per week), 355; crosscutter, keeping saws, Is 4d per hour; other crosscutters, Is 3d per hour; bullock driver, Is 3d per hour; | first ropeman, Is 3d per hour; second ropeman, Is 3d per hour; jackman, Is 3d per hour; all other labourers, including casual, Is 3d per hour; nightwatchman (per week), £2 12s fid. The hours of , work in town mills and yards and factories are not to exceed 47 hours per week and the hours shall be from 7.30 to noon and from 1 to 5 p.m. during the first five days of the week and from 7.30 to noon on Saturdays except that during the months of May, June and July the hours may be from 7.30 to noon and from 2.40 to 4.40 p.m. The hours may be adjusted by arrangement with the Union to suit varying conditions provided that not more than eight hours and a half be worked in any one day between the hours of G a.m. and ft p.m. and not more than 47 hours in one week. The usual conditions as to preference, and underrate workers are provided.
