The Assemblies of the Established and the Free Church has at Edinburgh discussed and established committees to draft a scheme for union. Lord Balfour, of Burleigh, presiding at the Established Church Assembly, said it was aknost unthinkable that two churches having so much in common could stand apart. • Bo'h the Assemblies passed resolutioas approving of a scheme as a Ic\hs for further negotiations. An amendment in the Free Assembly that disestablishment must be antecedent to union was negatived bv an overwhelming majority.
