X.Z. HEAVY AVEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP. LOWE BEATS BARTLETT. Press Association. —By Telegraph. GISBORNE, May 28. The contest between Bartlett (challenger I *, of Christchurch, and Lowe (the holder), of Gisborne, for the professional heavy weight boxing championship of New Zealand and a purse of £75 attracted a crowd that filled the Opera House to overcrowding. Lowe weighed list 301b and Bartlett 12st 21b. It proved one of the most strenuous heavy weight contests held in this district. Although really heavy and effective hitting was not very prevalent, by common consent Bartlett must be given credit for showing more aggressiveness against Lowe than any previous opponent. He did his best, however, only at close quarters. Iu the seventh round Lowe was struck down by an unexpected back-hand blow, but after waiting down as long as possible he returned to the fray little the worse. The contest ended at the close of the eleventh t und as a result of Bartlett giving up on account of injured wrist?, which had been troubling him since the fifth round.
