The Governor of Queensland, Sir Wm. McGregor, intends resigning during the present year.
The death is reported of Mr Langdon, Chairman of Committees in th« Westralian Assembly. Last evening at Eltham a most successful complimentary banquet was tendered the Hon. Fraser, Minister for Public Works.—Association. Mr H. C. Collinson's numerous friends will regret to learn that there is very little improvement in the star# of his health and that he is still very weak.
Mr II Hanger, teller at the Martou branch of the Bank of New Zealand, who has been transferred to Auckland, has been presented with a gold albert by the business people of Marton. Tbe staff presented him with a silver mounted pipe.
The death occurred at Timaru yesterday of Mr W. B. Howell, aged 72, who was familiarly spoken of as '' The Father of Timaru High School." Hu was one of the founders of the Farmers' Co-operative Association.—Association.
London reports the death of Sir Joseph Wilson Swan, M.A., F.R.S., D.Sc., Durham University. He invented the incandescent electric lamp bearing his name. He made improvements in photo-mechanical printing and in electric-metallurgical deposition; invented the carbon process for making permanent photographs and discovered the means of making rapid dry plates. He Avas knighted in 1904.
The death is announced at Timaru of Mrs Frances King, nee Shrimpton, daughter of the lirst printer of tlm Lyttelton Times. She married Mr •Tames A. King, a brother-in-law of Mr Barnard Rhodes King, who took part of the original Levels run from Rhodes Bros, and founded Otipua Homestead. Mrs King leaves two sons and a daughter.—Association.
