DO YOU KNOW ANYTHING?
'■' Do you know anything," is a byword in areas where the cup that cheers is avoided and where the business of "bottleo" flourishes. It is the recognised custom when any person goes out of the area for a holiday that he must return with at least one or two bottles to treat, his friends. In observing this rule John Callermale, of Ohakune, became the victim 5 of one Joseph Murphy, of Palmers- j ton, resulting in a prosecution heard before Messrs W. F. Durward and A I
J. Graham yesterday morning. It ap- J pears that Callermale had occasion to • take a trip to Palmcrston and had 1 pre-arranged for a social gathering to j take place on his return, having in- i vited several of his friends to partici- J
pate. On arrival at Palmcrston he i met one Joseph Murphy, and after a j few convivial wines together explain- j ed the object of his mission. Murphy j suggested that it was cheaper to pur- j chase a jar wholesale, and that it j would be more convenient to pack up. j The suggestion met with approval, j and accordingly the two purchased ' the necessary fluid and jar to the ! value of £3 7s (id. By arrangement j Murphy was to pack the jar at a local j hotel, but in the packing process ap- j parently mistook the jar for a pump- j
kin and dropped the latter into the . parcel. A convivial glass followed, j and Murphy saw his Ohakune friend j oft' by train. There was great rejoic- ■ inf in the township of Ohakune amongst the friends when Caller- '■ I male's arrival was announced and the j afternoon dragged heavily until the j opportune time arrived to broach the J jar. The feelings of the gathering can be better imagined than describe!
when instead of a whisky jar a pumpkin was disclosed. Callermale return- ; ed bv the first available train to Pal- ' merstou and laid an information against Murphy, who was fined £5 and ordered to refund t3 7s (id. value of the whisky, in default seven days' ( imprisonment. j
