EXPRSSS TRAIN DELAYED.
DRIVER'S PROMPTNESS PREVENTS SERIOUS ACCIDENT. Press Association. —By Telegraph. TIMARU, March 31. An accident at 4.30 delayed the second express north this afternoon. A ram fair was being held at Smithfield showgrounds and the shunting of sheep trucks had been going on. When the express approached the loop-line, Driver Harrington noticed the points at "half-cock" and put on the emergency brake and checked the pace. The engine and tender passed the points but the first carriage turned off and pulled the engine and tender off the rails. The three derailed vehicles ploughed up the permanent way. Fireman C. W. Beaumont jumped from the engine and struck the lever of the points severely injuring his knee and leg. The promptness of the driver in applying the brakes doubtless saved greater damage. The train will be delayed some hours while temporary rails are * being laid. It is unknown at present what time the train will get away but it is hoped before 10 p.m. The passengers felt no great shock after that caused by the brake.
