A London cable announces the death of Tito Mattei, pianist, composer and conductor. Major-General Godley, Commandant of the Forces, passed through Palmerston by the midnight express. Mr and Mrs Meehan, Feilding, leave on Thursday on a trip to Europe. They will travel via Suez. Mr F. Kensington has been elected a life honorary member of the Men's Social Club in recognition of his many valuable services.

Constable Eade, of Feilding, leaves for his new station, Tokaanu, to-day, where he will be in' full charge. Constable Morroney, of Wellington, will take his place.

The Bishop of Wellington, Dr. Sprott, will consecrate the church at Linton on Tuesday, May 5, and on the following day will open the new church at Palmerston.

Colonel ' Robin, QuartermasterGeneral of the New Zealand Defence Forces, is expected to arrive at Palmerston to-day on Departmental business.

Mr Dugald Mathieson, M.A., assistant master at Wellington College, is in Palmerston making enquiries into the matters in dispute between Mr 6. A. Lundie, M.A., assistant master at the High School, and the local High School Board. He is the accredited representative of the Secondary School Teachers' Association.

His many friends will regret to learn of the death at Shannon on Monday of Mr Edward Berwick Stephenson at the age of 49 years. He was the youngest son of the late Mr Stephenson, of Eitzherbert East. Nurse Stephenson, of Palmerston Hospital, and Mrs L. E. Bryant, of Fit:;herbert, are sisters of deceased, and Mr G. N. Stephenson, of Shannon, is a. brother.

Mr W. T. Mills, organiser for the Social Democrat Party has declined' to accept re-nomination for the office for a further term. He states that the duties of the office would make necessary a further postponement of important matters including the publication of a new book, which requires bis presence in the United States. He intends leaving soon after July next. \ The Rev. David Meadowcroft, a retired Congregational Minister, died yesterday at his residence in Wellington, at the age of 75. Deceased spent some time as a missionary in India and was then stationed at Perth and later for 32 years was Minister of East Melbourne Congregational Church. He retired four or five years ago and went to Wellington to reside. He leaves a widow, four sons and four daughters. Oiie son is Mr Frank Meadowcroft, New Zealand manager for Cadbury's. Deceased was an expert Egyptologist and was learned in religions of India. He was also a prominent Mason.
