STRIKE MATTERS.
ORDERLY RAILWAY MEN
A NEW SOLUTION,
MASS MEETING CALLED,
Received 5.5 p.m. Sydney, April 6
The railway strike has undergone but little change. A meeting of the men last night discussed a new offer of the Government to appoint a royal commission to report on the whole situation. If it is accepted the work of the commission will be hurried so that a settlement may be reached at the earliest possible moment. A mass meeting has been called for to-morrow to further discuss the propossal. A meeting of the executive of the Employers' Federation discussed the present position as affecting trade and resolved, in view of the loss caused to traders and the inconvenience suffered by the public through the dislocation of the carrying branch of the railways, to call a general meeting of the Federation to-morrow to urge upon the Government the necessity for immediately restoring the service.
A feature of this recent strike is the orderliness and good behaviour of the men. Though special police are detailed for the strike areas their duties are purely nominal. FODDER RUNNING SHORT. Sydney, Apri 15. The nip of the Barrier strike is beginning to be seriously felt. Fodder is running short.
Two sections of the amalgamated zinc works have closed and the British mine has ceased breaking and hauling ore. The Junction mine closes to-day owing to shortage of trucks to carry the ore. The Northern Miners are taking a ballot to ascertain if the men are favourable to submitting their troubles to a Wages Board. Hon. Mr Carmichael's proposal to appoint a special court to deal with the situation is not favourably regarded. AFiER FERRY STRIKE. Sydney, April 5. The Sydney ferries have raised the prices of periodical tickets from ten to twenty per cent. Of the increased expenditure necessitated by the concessions in wages half falls on the regular patrons and the other half on the company.
AMERICAN TIN MEN RIOT. TWO KILLED. Received 5.5 p. m. New York, April 5. A strike among the tin workers at Albany was followed by riots and two were killed.
