AUTOMATIC TELEPHONES.

COMPETITION IN TENDERING. The New Zealand Government (says a Wellington exchange) is assurred of competition in tenders for the installation of the automatic telephone systems for the centres. For some months past the representative for the Strowager system has been in Wellington, and it was that company's set which was put up in the old General Post Office for some weeks, and was used more recently for show purposes at the Citizens' Carnival. recently the Western Electric Company, of America have come into the field, and have set up a 000-connections set in the laboratory of the new General Post Office. In its general idea the Western Electric Company's system is akin to the Strowger, but in the detailed worKing parts and their arrangements there are considerable differences. The Government has concluded a contract with the Strowger people to erect 000-connections extensions to both the Auckland and Wellington exchanges, and these are now being installed, but that fact has no bearing on the tenders for the main installations, the tenders for which do not close until the middle of next month.
