AUSTRALIA'S DRAWBACKS. | POLL TAX A BLUNDER. Press Assn—By Telegraph—Copyright Received 9 p.m. Fremantle, March 19. Kwei Chih, the Chinese Consul to New Zealand, is a passenger aboard the R. M. S. Ora na. Interviewed while i* port here, lie said:— "Australia's drawback is lack of population. How do you propose to populate your vast territory if yon insist on race restriction. "
Kwei Chih does not agree that the decay of the Australian aboriginals is due to contact with whites. He considers it is caused by their philosophical idea of isolation or their absence of intercourse with other nations.
He added: "China was degenerating until she opened her doors fifty years ago. Australia is acting prematurely in restricting free immi«« gration."
