Swindlers induced a Russian lady to entrust them with a handbag containing jewels worth £6250 whilst she visited a cinematograph show. The men then decamped. SUFFOCATED IN A SEWER. London, March 18. A number of workmen were overcome by t gas in a sewer at Bayswater. Firemen with smoke helmets rescued two and bravely endeavoured to rescue a third but failed. The rescuers were repeatedly hauled to the surface unconscious. Two of the firemen perished. SOAP MAKERS' LAWSUIT. London, March 18.
Messrs Brunner and Nond's application to restrain Messrs Lever Brothers from using the applicants' process for purifying oils has been dismissed. Defendants admitted the process was worth a quater of a million a year, but they claimed that they had a prior knowledge of it, which invalidated the patent.
INDENTURED LABOUR IN FIJI London, March 18.
Hon. L. Harcourt, Secretary for the Colonies, in reply to a question, said he was communicating with the Governor of Fiji regarding the frequency of murders being due to marital jealousy arising from the inadequate number of women under indentured immigration. The Government did not think a special enquiry necessary. REWARD FOR BRAVERY.
Lloyds has presented Capt. Bidwell, of the Narrung, with a gold watch and cheque for £3OO, the first officer with £125, and the boatswain with £SO in recognition of their work during the great storm in Christmas Week " NO FOUL PLAY. The Southampton police state that there is nothing to support the theory of foul play in connection with the death of Frances Leslie on the Oceanic. £ MINERS RESCUED. The entombed Townhead miners have been rescued. FRENCH CRISIS. Paris, March 18. The Senate rejected the Electoral Reform Bill providing for representation of minorities. The Ministry consequently resigned. SYDNEY COAL STRIKE. Received 9.35 p.m. Sydney, March 19. An aggregate meeting of miners resolved not to resume work until Rnssell and two others are reinstated. A tribunal is to be appointed later to investigate their cases. UNEVEN SENTENCES. Sydney, March 19. William James was sentenced to gaol for nine months for the manslaughter of Ralph Chambers, as cabled on February 6th. Hugh Duncan, aged sixteen years, who pleaded'guilty to the murder of John Connolly, as cabled on November sth, was recommended to mercy by the jury on account of a deficiency in his intellect. He was sentenced to death.
PETROLEUM WELLS BURNT. Bucharest, March 19, Petroleum wells at Banamoseni were burnt. Seven persons are dying from injuries, and many others were severely burned. SHIPPING. London, March 19. The Trade Commissioner reports that during 1912, Canadian trade with Australia increased by twenty millions sterling as compared with the trade of 1911. Australia's trade with Canada increased by ten millions. ZEPPELIN AIRSHIPS. Received 11 p.m. Berlin, March 19. Future Zeppelins will be fitted with gun platforms.
