INCREASED SHIPPING FREIGHTS.
♦ COASTAL SERVICES AFFECTED
There lias been an iucrease of shipping freights at Wellington, which has affected two much-used coastal services. Messrs Bannatyne and Co. (agents for the Anchor steamer Nikau) and Mecsrs Johnston and Co. advise that the rate to and from Motueka lias been increased Is a ton (Weight or measurement). This brings the freight to 13s 6d, making on a par with that to Nelson. Messrs Johnston and Co. also notify that the freight to Havelock and Pelorus Sound has been increased 2s fid per ton. These increases are in conformity with the tendency to increase freights all round. The principal reason given by the owners is the increased cost of running the boats.—Post.
