(From Our Own Correspondent). >r Mr Horrocbs, deutist, was the victim of rather a nasty accident .yesterday. He was cleauiug a glass stoppered bottle with hot water and in slmsiug it caused the bottle to !- burst. Fortnuiitaly ho escaped injury n to the face, but received muty wnnnds and cuts to tho hands, necessitating medical u?sistanoe and the insertion of savcral stitches. At yesterday's meeting ot the Mauawatn County Council a oouuoillor stated that ha had heard old settlors mention that small schooners had in tho olden davs navigated tho Mauawatu river aa far up as Oroua bridge. Whicli statement brought forth the assertion of another councillor that so far back as 1871 his father used to navigata the river in a small steamer up as far aa JaoLeytown and Ngawakatau. A councillor asked at the Mauawatu Oouucil meeting yesterday if anything had been doue re registration of motor cars. He understood other local bodies made a registra- * tion charge of 10s. It was pointed i out that the revenue would only amount to aoout £2 or £3. " Whatever it is we may as well have it" i was the reply. , 1 The Rev. A. S. Innea Jones was present as Fending representative at the meeting of the Anglican Synod, whicli took place in Wellington. .
