THE MARKETS.

LONDON WOOL SALES.

Per Press Association.—Copyright,

London, December 4. The wool Bales were animated. Crossbred sold well, but merinos wer« irregular. At the tallow sabs 939 casks were offered and all sold. Mutton : Fine, 35s 81; medium, 83s. Beef: Fine, sis; modium, 335.

Messrs Joseph Nathan and Co.'s London house reports, under date October 22ml :— Oar last report was dated the Ist instant, wheu tho fifth series of sales was iu progress. Dnriug the remainder of tho auctions, which closed with .a. firm tons, there was no alteration in the position of merinos or fine amsbrods. Competition for the coarser grades of crossbreds in tho grease became' somewhat more animated towards the end, but no corresponding expansion was noticeable in the demaud for medium sorts, which continued to sell with considerable irregularity. Slipes of all kinds slightly hardened, and finally ruled from par to 5 per cent above July rates as regards the coarser descriptions and fully 5 per cent, for the finer qualities. The quantities catalogued during the series were:-—Australian, 86,469 bales; New Zealand, 56,163 bales; South Africau, 2098 bales; total, 95,680 bale 3, the total held over for future realization ainouuting to some 7000 bales, of which about 6000 were Ne-w Zealand wool. Since the close of the auctions, there- has been a fair amount of enquiry by private treaty, which has resulted in the sale of a good many withdrawn lots at very full rates/ In the manufacturing districts, prices for "spot" parcels, both merino and crossbred, are well maintained, but the market for future delivery has recently shown signs of weakness. This setback, however, is. it appears, in a large measure due to top-rnakers' endeavors to depress prices in the overseas markets, consumption being well maintained both in England and on the Continent. The gross arrivals to date for the sixth series. which is fixed to open on the 2Gth November, are as follows:—Australian, 17,924 bales; New Zealand, 9291 bales: South African, 7017 "bales; total, 34,232 bales, of which about 5000 bales Australian, 500 New Zealand and 6000 South African have been forwarded direct to the Continent, Yorkshire, etc.
