SPORTING.

WOODVILLE MEETING.

(By "Augur.") The Woodville Meeting Opened yes- ! terday in real summer-like weather. The attendance was quite satisfactory and good fields faced the starter throughout the day. The racing was of an interesting character and in several the more heavily backed candidates failed to run up to expectations. Mr Angus Keith was in charge of the barrier and got through his day's workv ery creditably. The big field of 18 was saddled up for the opening event. The public sorted out Lochiela in Mr James Macara's nomination as most worthy of support, Crackpot, by Crackshot, and Contour, by Phoebus Apollo, who was saddled up by Fred. Tilley, closely disputing po&ition of second javorite. Lochiela won only by a narrow margin after an interesting race.

Scratchings reduced the hurdle field down to six runners. To Uira and Taura carried the bulk of the money, the former being slightly better favorite of the two. As at Feilding, Te Uira gave a very poor display while Taura won very easily at the finish from St. Amelia, who tired a lot over the last bit. Daisy Paul, after the good form she displayed at Feilding, was served up a very hot even-money favorite for the Grandstand Hack, but succumbed to an outsider in the Woodville trained Lomaria and also to the Mahaki mare Waicola who, with Rangiliaetea, were second favorites.

Chatterer, Gazeley, Barca, Ladylike, Oasis and King's Lynn being scratched, ten went to the post for the Woodville Handicap. Punters went hot and strong for Moral, despite his steadier of 9.5, and when

the machine cJosed he was paying only a shade over evens. The favorite put in one of his determined finishes but Mr Buick's San Fran mare Tangimoana had too much pace up and was a clear length to the good at the finish. The heavy accumulated penalties amounting to 161bs failed to stop that Bpeedy Conqueror horse, Motoa from again scoring in the Flying Handicap, making his third successive win. Another Feilding winner in Ikon acted as runner-up. displaying a good burst of speed inside the distance and going faster than anything else at the finish. A long overdue win came Aboriginal's way in the Borough Handicap in which the Winter Cup winner made every post a winning one. This was his first win since he au- [ nexed the big mile race at Riccarton. Despite this fact Aboriginal was served up very hot stuff, paying only a little over evens. The Welter Hack afforded another surprise. Lady Disdain, despite her load of 9.12 was sent out favorite, while Speciosa and Oakburne were also well backed. Speciosa was very erratic at the post and was got away with dicffiulty. She made most of the running but Waipunehu had her measure at the distance and won comfortably. The concluding event, the Electric, over five furlongs, again served to show up that speedy mover Lord Soult in- a very attractive light. With 9.11 he won with a good deal in hand, and was officially credited with doing 61 2-ssecs. , The totalisator arrangements worked very smoothly and as the last race was not timed to be run, until 5.45 backers had plenty of time between each race to get their money on. The total for the day was £10,297 as against £7468 for corresponding day last year, an increase of £2892. Results:—
