ALLEGED ATTEMPTED ROBBERY.
Per Press Association.
Nelson, May 3
Wm. Hewitt, driver of the Waka-puaka-Nelson coach, was going out to Glen on Friday evening at six o'clock and when near Leager's a tall well-dressed man hailed him and got on the box. Hewitt says he noticed that the man attempted to rob the money bag and when discovered he struck Hewitt on the face and jumped off the coach. Hewitt, who is a stalwart Irishman, says lie stopped the horses and followed the man and had a severe fight, and left the man much mauled on the road. The matter was reported to the poliec and a man was seen coming into town the same night. Hewitt, however, proceeded to Wakapuaka, did not report the matter till next day, but it is supposed the man is still in town.
