Per Press Association —Copyright. Melboubne, May 7. Advices have been received that the barque Crompton, Melbourne to Queenstown, with 7000 tons of wheat, has been beached at Queenstown. Her position is critical, as the decks are awash at high water. The disaster is due to the ship settling on an anchor. A youth named Grace, in protecting a woman from assault, struck and killed lier assailant Adelaide, May 7. A recount of the Senate vote has been ordered, notwithstanding the destruction of the ballot papers. The pilot launch went out to wain the Port Chalmers, but the signals were unnoticed or disregarded till too late. The steamer's plates were rent 10 feet from the Btern below the waterline and the forepeak is full of water.
