BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The Drainage Loan.

Snow's Streets Again.

In the absence of the Mayor, Cr Edwards occupied the chair at <he ordinary meeting of tho Borough Council on Tuesday evening. Crs Haydon, E'lvcnhill, Armstrong, Jack, France, Goodger, Cooke, Cop .'land and Guy were present. Tho Sanitary Insppc'or of the Council reported that he had made 57i visits during the past month. An invitation to the Council from Hie Fire Brigade was accented to attend the ceremony in connection with the official opening of the new fire brigade station at Terrace End. On tho motion of Cr Kaydon, seconded by Cr J. Copeland, it was decided tlnfc £50 be paid to the Fire Brigade to complete payment of tie new building at Terrace End. This was in .ausvrer to a request from the live Erigule, the above sum being the balance oE tlie allocation made by the Council towards the object. Two residents of Boundary Iload sc:it in a icijuisition to tlie Council prajins that the water main be extended to their property. —The matter was referred to the Waterworks Committee. I lie request of a committee set up to promote a farewell entertainment to the two Palmcrstou members of the New Zealand band, tint the v c of the Council Chamber be given for a public meeting in connection with the project on Saturday evening next, was granted. A communication was read from the Secivtiry to the Treasury, informing the Council that, if an application for a specific amount for the construction of drainage works were sent to the Colonial Treasurer, such loan would be submitted for his provision 1 approval. Several councillors considered that the appHcalion should be made for a £20,000 loan, but others having pointed out that tlie Council might as well ask for a large-r sum, it was decided to increase tho application to £30,000. The following resolution, moved by Cr Cooke, and seconded by Cr Goodger, was approved:—" Tbat application be made to tho Government for a loan of £30,000, to be advanced £10,001) each year, fir«t advance this year." The vexed question of the unfinished state of Pahiatu-i and other streets in Hokowbi'u was sgain before tho council. A deputation of residents in tho locality of Pshia'ua-streeli appealed to tbe council to take over the street. Messrs Snow and Co. were the original owners of the pr perty, and the council had previously refused to take over this and other streets in Hokowhitu until Messrs Snow bad farmed and metalled the tin in. Heading the deputation, Mr Woodroofe said that the residents in the district were informed when they took up the land that the road w&s to be formed and metalled. It bad been cut up badly by traffic, however, and nothing had yet been done in the matter of improving it or transferring it to the council. In view of the revenue the council received from properties facing the street, he asked the council to take over tho street. The appeal was supported by Mr Hirscb, as a trustee in the lata Mr Gattsche's estate. Mr Woodroofe further explained that Mr Snow.had declared that he had gone to the expense of levelling the street, the plan having been handed over to the council. This, however, had been mislaid by the council. Mr Snow then fore considered it would be a hardship if he were forced to go over the work again through no fault of his. Tho deputation offered, if the council would take over the street, to bear rhe cost of carrying out any work in reason. Or Jack thought that Snow and Co. sbou'd bo made to put the street in order, and tbat tbo ratepayers should not b3 called upoa to contribute anything towards the cost. It was finally decided that the inspector submit a report as to what is required to complete Pahiatua and Scandia-streets.
