LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. ' Tuesday. The Hon. Dillon Bell was sworn in. Correspondence between Government and Bank of JN"ew South Wales re Two and a Half- million^ loan was ordered to be laid on the table.
HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. Tuesday. The House met at 2.30 p.m. Mr. Andrew will move, That several railvrays for opening the outlying districts in Otagc be proceeded with forthwith. A Committee of Inquiry into weather reporting is to - be asked for. " , Grey will move for a triennial Parliament and manhood suffrage. Rees will ask whether' Government bear's the ,cost of the- " Waka Maori ' libel case, and will move for a select Committee to enquire into -the procedure of Courts to the modification of the laws'." Government have declined to print the suggestions' of County- Councils and Road Boards- with a- view to improving the County government of the
future. The documents%re too voluminous. Government said, in reply to Richmond, they had no intention or relieving Road Boards from compulsory annual valuation. A large supply of the revised edition of the " New Zealand Pilot " has been ordered. They are obtainable at all Customhouses. ' /■•*. Government informed. Tole that all the marine laws of the colony are being consolidated. A Bill will be brought down this session. , Government hope to be able to dp something ■•this" session respecting the closing of cemeteries within all towns. The Auckland Highway Districts Valuation Bill, and Crossed Cheques Bill were passed. There was a sharp discussion on the latter to make any cheque under £2Q, negotiable even if crossed oh the ground of great incon- , vehiehce athd men' who could not get j crossed^cheques cashed. Several amendments .were, proposed; but' 1 each attempt failed'.-/' V u*' The adjourned debate on the Charitable Institutions Bill was resumed, and occupied the House until 5.30, the only new idea bemglby; Fox, who. asked from thej Government that they would introduce .a clause making theBill law for 12 months only, and during, that time/ have commission to. collect in*,.formation and data respecting the work-' ingpf these, soeialihstitutibns in other , ' colonies and America;^' .
