A correspondent to " Land and Water " is responsible for the following : — When His Fijian Majesty retired from public life, he wished to present the club with which he had brained so many hundreds of his subjects, as a mark of homage, to accompany what were left of them m their transfer to his successor. Upon. this being refused, the King called a council, to which, as His Majesty was under the influence of palm wine, and the aforesaid club was whirling like a windmill, none came. Since then he has led a do Ice far niente, jolly kind of life, as a well-pensioned sovereign should. Lately, however, it seems, His Majesty has been delighted with the pretty pictures m some tracts, and out of pure gratitude — and what could be purer — wished to send- seven sable virgins, as youthful wives, to Dr. Mullens, who, he is under the impression, is King of the London Missionary Society, at home. The civil governor is said to have declined to forward them, as firmly as he did/to send the club, whereupon, the Court news runs, "His Majesty waxed furious, went m furiously for palm wine, and yelling, and brandishing his club most furiously, drove man, woman, and child from the presence." *
