MANAWATU HIGHWAYS BOARD.

The regular monthly meeting of the above Board was held m the Highways Office on Monday, 15th January, 1877. MEMBEBS PBESENT. Messrs McNeil (Chairman), Farmer, Hammond, McEwen, and McPherson. MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting having been read, on the motion of Mr Farmer, seconded by Mr McEwen, were confirmed. COBBESPOITDEIf CE . Letter from Colonial Treasurer asking for a return of amount of rates collected from March 1875, to March 1876. Letter from Mr Halcombe, Chairman of the Manchester Highway Board, asking for a similar return for that district. The Secretary informed the' meeting that the returns had been forwarded some time ago. Letter from Mr Powriall, Manager of the Public Hall, accepting the terms offered by the Board fpr the use of one of the rooms as an office, rent £25 per annum, to be paid quarterly. Letter from Messrs. Randolph, Walker, Batt, and Row^, of Earere, drawing the attention of the/Board to the present unsatisfactory state, of the road adjoining their property towards the Manawatu River, and urging the necessity for the erection of a bridge across the Mongaoni stream*

Petition from settlers m the Scandinavian block, above Palmerston, requesting that their road might receive some attention during the summer months. " Resolved, — That the Inspector visit the road, and lay particulars before the next meeting. Mr Edwards, of Motoa, waited upon the Board to request that a ditch might be cut from the road opposite .his property towards the lake, a distance of about 64 chains. The settlers intended guaranteeing two-thirds of the cost. Resolved, — That tenders be called for the work, and for a culvert across the road opposite the ditch at its junction with the Motoa road. Letter from Messrs Robinson, Nye, and others, of Foxton, requesting that No. 4 Line be put m a state of repair for horse traffic. Resolved to call tenders for the work. MISCELLANEOUS BUSINESS. The Secretary was instructed to write to the District Engineer, and ask if it was his intention to deepen the sidedrain of the main line between McKeowin's road and the Awapuni outlet. The Secretary was instructed to take legal proceedings at once for the recovery of all outstanding rates. . It was brought" under the notice of the meeting that Warden Mitchell, No. 6 Ward, had forfeited his seat through non-attendance, having been absent from four consecutive meetings. The Chairman stated that he would at once take the necessary steps, according to the Highway Act> for the election of a Warden to represent the ward. Resolved, — That tenders be called for felling 30 chains of bush on McKeowin's line, Karere. . Also, to re-advertise tenders for metalling on Penny's line, Carnarvon ; and fencing about 35 chains on Typo bush line. The Inspector was instructed to visit the road line running from Mount Sewart past Ellemi's, and prepare an estimate of the probable cost of bridges and culverts required to make the road passable for dray traffic. Also, to call tenders for cutting and filling on Wil* son's line, Sandon. The valuation roll for the present year was laid before the meeting and accepted. Owing to non-supply of the map for the Otaki portion that district is not included at present. The Secretary was instructed to bring the matter under the notice of the Government, and again ask them to supply the map as promised some time ago, m order to have-the valuation complete. Resolved, — That the valuation be advertised as open to the inspection of ratepayers, and that nptices be sent to ratepayers, m accordance with " The Rating Act, 1876 ;" and that the Secretary get clerical assistance for a short time m order to get through the extra work. Karere Road. — Formation and culverts : Accepted — S. Guldbransen* £1 7s 9d per chain, culverts £12. Declined — Bergurist and Co., £1 11s 9d, culverts £4 10s each ; H. Sanding Contract, Motoa Road. — Barry and Co., the whole work, £59 ss, declined ; Gotty and Co., at per chain, £3 10s, also declined. Fresh tenders to be called for this work. No tenders were received for metalling on Typo Bush and Penny's line. The next Board meeting to be held on the 15th February, 1877.
