FASHIONS AT ELLERSLIE
At the opening day of the Auckland Racing summer carnival the unseasonal weather had a noticeable effect on the frocking. Semi-ta.ilored light-weight suits and frocks in a variety of gaily-patterned materials were much in evidence. There were no pronounced departures from the conventional trends of fashion during the war years. On the whole the frocking was restrained and simple, still reflecting war time austerity. An exception was the number of _ interesting and amusing hats, including extremes in the boater, coachman, bowler, and bell-topper designs. Others were composed entirely of flowers and - veiling secured to the head with a bandeau. Iu contrast there were many plainer hats of the-beret and wide-brimmed straw types.
