GENERALS ACCUSED
TRIALS AT BRYANSK

Lieut.-General Hemmann, one of the Germans on trial before a Soviet military tribunal at Bryansk, who is charged with the mass murder of Soviet citizens, ... pleaded that he acted on orders - from Colonel-General Schmidt, commander of the Second German Panzer Army. Accused denied that he violated international law. Lieut.-General Bernhardt, another of the accused, admitted that he used 7 civilians for de-mining jobs and sent others to Germany. The prosecution alleged that -in 1942-43, when "Hammann was commander at Orel, there were numerous executions of Soviet workers "for unsatisfactory -work." One group of workers was killed by mustard gas to test its effect. The prosecution also alleged, that Bernhardt organised punitive raids in which villages were burnt and peaceable civilians were killed.
