A resolution to this effect was carried unanimously at a special meeting of the Auckland branch of the baking trades' employees held to discuss the application of the recently enacted Factories Amendment Act to the bakins industry. . , , , ■, Claiming that they had been placed in an invidious position through the anomalous wording of which provides for a universal 40-hour week in factories, the workers have taken exception to the action of certain employers in reducing week-drty hours in bakeries, and asking the employees to work eight hours on Saturdays for ordinary rates of pay. The unionists claim that this has defeated the intention of the Act. # If the resolution is put into effect, bread baked on the Thursday will have to be used by housewives until they can obtain fresh supplies on the Monday. _ , The secretary of ihe Master Association (Mr R. S. Harrop) said that the question was one that should be considered by the Dominion organisation. The hours in the industry had been reduced to a 40-hour week last February, and not by the recent factories Amendment Act. If the men had a grievance it was with the Government and not with the master bakers. The employers claimed that they were entitled to ask the men to work on Saturdays as the award provided for a 40-hour week, which could be spread over six days.
