The Governor-General designate (Sir Bernard Freyberg) has had another operation. A picee of shrapnel, which entered his ankle in the last war, has been troubling him, so he recently had it removed. He refused all attempts to get him to rest afterwards, says the special correspondent of the Press Association in London. .
General G. L. Carpenter, the fifth general of the* Salvation Army, accompanied by Mrs Carpenter, will arrive in New Zealand on January 3 from Australia. He will be conducting five days of public meetings in each of the four centres. General Carpenter com-, menced work in a printing office and after joining the Salvation Army gained rapid promotion. Much of his time has been given .to literary work in Australia, New Zealand, and England. He has had charge of a large number of the Salvation Army journals and was a member of General Booth's personal staff and head of the literary department at International Headquarters.
