40-HOUR WEEK ON FARMS

SOUTH CANTERBURY PROPOSAL. (Press Assn.) TIMARU, Dec. 14. A decision to set up a committee to present proposals for a 40-hour week on farms was made at a meeting of the South Canterbury executive of the Federated Farmers today. Consideration will be given to prices for farm produce and co-operation with other sections of the community in effecting thy proposed measure. The decision was made after a lon** discussion in nhich it was mentioned that the farmers produced about 93 per cent, of the wealth of New Zealand as a result of working long hours. The president (Mr J. Dempsey) said that it was unreasonable to expect other sections of the community to handle that produce in a 40-hour week. A 40-hour week for farm labourers did not mean a 40-hour week for the farmers, who had to work longer.
