The December meeting of the Taonui Women’s Institute was held at- the residence of Mrs H. Heys, Mrs Heys presiding. She welcomed back Mrs! Cossar. Correspondence was received! from Mesdames Baricoat and Hendle. ] A roll-call, “The best Christmas that' I can remember,” caused much I amusement. A Christmas party for members’ children was arranged to he held at the Meeting House shortly. It was arranged that members knit peggy squares for a quilt to be sent away for Unrra. It was also arranged to hold a picnic in February. .The competitions resulted: Felt articles, Mrs T. D. Stokes 1, Mrs H. Heys 2, Mrs Redpath 3; hand posy, Mrs J. Heys 1, Mesdames G. Jefferies and H. Jefferies, equal, 2. A community afternoon tea was served. Inquiries today elicited the information that the position about shopping hours has not been clarified and “until there is compulsion in the matter ol closing on Saturday mornings there are some retailers who propose to keep open and pay the additional rate to employees for the hours worked on Saturdays. According to a farmer in the Fending district who grows wheat, crops this year are likely, to be light. Mouneeys, Ltd., report a good yarding of poultry and pigs at their auction mart sale in Fcilding on Friday, when the following were the realisations i Poultiyi Light lions, Is to 2s 6d; heavy, 4s 9d to 7s 9d; pullets,‘Bs 6d; light cockerels, 2s 3d to 3s 9d; heavy, 5s to 8s 6d; rocsters, 2s 3d to 5s 6d; ducklings, Is; ducks, 3s to 6s 8d; drakes, 4s; geese, 6s 9d to 8e 9d; goslings, 5s 6d. Pigs: Sucking pigs, 18s; slips, £1 5s to £1 10s; stores, £2 9s; porkers. £2 16s to‘£2 17s.
