ADVISORY COMMITTEE

HELP FOR EX-SERVICEMEN

Progress reports on the work of the Ex-Servicemen’s Advisory Committee were presented by the deputy executive officer (Mr C. R. Gair) at a meeting of the committee last evening. The reports showed that an increasing number of ex-servicemen were applying at the office each week and that the'majority of cases were successfully dealt with, every case being given that close personal consideration which was the key note of the committee’s policy. A very satisfactory feature in the increasing recognition of this businessmen’s advisory organisation was the development of an effective liaison with the State departments concerned—the Rehabilitation Department and the National Service Department —and the understanding that had been built up between these bodies. During the past month a pamphlet addressed to employers had been printed and circulated to the business community through the good offices of the Employers’ Federation. The chairman (Mr W. M- Sexton) said that the response to the appeal for financial support which had been organised through the various trade groups was very satisfactory and the money in hand or in sight enabled the committee to plan for executive services for six months. It was therefore, possible to ask the meeting to confirm the appointment of Mr- Gair, an exserviceman, as deputy executive officer, and this appointment was unanimously endorsed, it being recognised that Mr Gair had proved his capabilities for the appointment. With the imminent return of large drafts to New Zealand there would be a heavy call on the committee’s services, and it was felt that the organisation was now well established and capable of carrying out its objectives in an efficient manner. In reply to a question by Mrs Mansion! regarding assistance to ex-service-women, an assurance was given that the services of the committee were at their disposal equally as for, men.
