PETROL TAX
MISUSE ALLEGED. A resolution asking for a more equitable distribution of the petrol tax was passed by a meeting of representatives of the Palmers ton JNorth Uity Council and borough and county councils in the i\'o. 9 jiighways District, in Palmerston Nortn yesterday. 'the meeting had. failed to agree on any change in the allocation or heavy traffic fees, and Mr A. E. Manslord (iviayor of Palmerston North), in introducing the subject of the petrol tax, said that this was an issue which affected all local bodies and he hoped they would agree tins time., The tax had been levied for the improvement and upkeep of roads, but instead of that' was being used to bolster up the Consolidated Fund. The conference delegates should approach their respective councils with a request that the .matter be rigorously supported. Mr F. H. Hudson (Horowhenua County) said that this was -already the subject of representations by the Counties' Association and the Municipal Association to the Minister. Mr Mansford moved that the conference request the Counties' Association and the Municipal Association to further press the representations being made for a more equitable distribution of the petrol tax. This was seconded by Mr A. B. Shannon (Oroua) and carried. ,\
