MEAT EXPORTS

Since the publication of meat export ■killings to June 30. when the New Zealand Meat Producers' Board surveyed the season, there has been a certain amount of activity at the freezing works, and the final figures for the season to July 28 nre now available. The oxce'.lent results to date fully support the previous statement that the Dominion's meat producers made a substantial extra contribution to the food supply of Britain, while at the same time meeting obligations to the Allied forces in the Pacific area.

Export killings at New Zealand works to July 28 arc set out below in comparison with corresponding details for the previous season, to July 29, 1944;—Lambs (carcases), 10,659.075 (10.508.973); wethers (carcases), 770,229 (641,556) ; owes (carcases), 2,015 670 (1,962,738); beef (quarters), 896,154 (482,816). The following figures show that the increase in average weights this season has been an important factor in the increased export tonnage of meat. The figures in parentheses of the previous season show the improvement: —North Island: Lambs, 34.19 (32.74); wethers, 59.19 (55.62); ewes. 57.14 (53.08). South Island: Lambs. 35.05 (34.61); -Aethers, 51.02 (49.66); ewes, 53.13 (51.58). Stocks of meat in coo', store awaiting export at the end of July were appreciably lower than at the corresponding date of 1944. indicating that the Dominion's substantial increase in production has not been handicapped by shipping shortage, and that the outlook in this respect for the coming season is good.
