FUGITIVE FROM POLICE

DETECTIVE’S LONG CHASE.

Chased by Detective F. X. Quin, a •Maori yesterday afternoon traversed part of Main Street and Andrew louiig Street mid doubled in and about Campbell Street and Bourke Street until eventually he ran from a residential section into the arms of Constable W. Sleeth, who was one of a team from the Police Force seeking another wanted man, who had jumped from a moving train while under escort. The detective met with both misfortune and good fortune, but was never far from his quarry, and the attention the chase aroused prompted civilians to offer information to other members of the Police Force who were . cruising throughout the area seeking the other man. Early in the chase the detective and a carrier handling a bed became entangled and the Maori then secured a lead of about 50 yards. A civilian who attempted to stop tlie Maori was fended off. Mr Qum called on a car-driver to provide transport but, after slowing down, the car drove away smartly and the detective again lost ground. A boy then assisted materially in keeping the man in sight while the pursuer attempted to secure reinforcements. The lad, however, riding near tlie Maori, called: “Hey, there 3 a man back there wanting you, and the remark added speed to the fleeing man, who crossed from Campbell Street to Bourke Street through the backyards. At this stage an Army truck driver came to the detective’s assistance and the fugitive went to cover. Chased from this, lie returned to Campbell Street again by way of Cuba Street and ran across the block into a house facing Bourke Street. There, aided by the driver of the Army truck, Mr Quin commenced a search of rooms and the outbuildings. The Maori then left the house and ran to Bourke Street for the second time, but was securely bold by Constable _Sleet.li, who was, in company with Detective G. Long, cruising about the area in a car, and who was actually seeking the man from the train. In the Court today, be-fore Mr C. G. Marsack, S.M..
