MAGISTRATE’S COURT

•Mr 11. P. Lawry, S.M., presided at a sitting of (he Magstrate’s Court yesterday. Bernard C. E. Williams, of Palmerston North (Mr Petersen), appeared on remand on a charge of failing to enrol in the General Reserve. Mr Petersen produced a copy of a medical certificate regarding .defendant’s health. A line of £25 was imposed, the Magistrate remarking that under the special circumstances he would not send defendant to gaol. R. O’Hara, mechanic, was lined £1 for driving a motor-car along Rangitikei Street without due care and attention. V. D. Cunningham was charged with driving a motor-car over a railway crossing when a rail-ear was approaching within half a mile. Traffic Inspector Shearer .said defendant went over the crossing at Princess Street while" the warning lights were operating. The rail-car was only about one-tenth of a mile away. It was not. a bad case. A line of £5 was imposed, L. M. Buiek-Contdable was fined 10s for parking a motor-car within 611 of a fire-plug. \Y. R. Cherrie (Mr Gordon) was fined 10s for having no warrant of fitness for a trade motor-vehicle. L. 11. Chapman, of Rangiotu, aliarged with having no warrant of fitness for a motorcycle and with not producing a motor driver’s license, was fined 10s on the first charge and £1 on the second. Harold C. Cornwall, plumber, pleaded guilty to charges of assault. Senior-Ser-geant Audley said licensed returned to his hoarding-house at 5.30 o’clock one morning and when the landlady spoke to him lie assaulted tier and also her son, who went to her assistance. Complaints had been received previously regarding his behaviour. Accused, was fined £3 on the first charge and £2 on the second.
