SALVATION ARMY

The Palmerston North Salvation Army Baud held a solo competition in the Citadel, Broadway, recently, when a large congregation assembled to hear tho 20 men competing, and were rewarded with a most enjoyable evening. The competition was divided into three groups, junior, intermediate and soloist, Mr F. W. McLeod being the. adjudicator. Tile winners were; Junior, Bandsman E. White; intermediate, Bandsman F. Shearman ; soloist, Bandsman D. Hoare. Gratification at, tho high standard of playing, especially by the soloist group, was commented on by tho judge, who gave constructive comments on many of tho players. A gift and a bouquet of flowers were presented to Miss P. Tongs in thanks for her pianoforte accompaniments, ably rendered throughout the evening. Tho small margin of only two points in each case separated tho first three players. A fine gesture by the conductor and men of the City Band was appreciated, in that a full attendance was made at the citauel in lieu of the usual practice. Tho solo evening proved a fitting conclusion to the band week-end. the special leader and guest conductor being Brigadier A. Robinson, from Wellington headquarters. His son, Campbell, who acconfpanied the Brigadier rendered cornet solos of high standard. Thanksgiving and memorial funds wore inaugurated, tho proceeds from which are to be dedicated to the purchaso of a complete set of new instruments. The band is anticipating a visit to Wellington during tho King's Birthday week-end.
