HOSPITAL RATES

PRESENT SYSTEM CONDEMNED. (Press Assn.) WELLINGTON, Feb. 22 Abolition of the present system of hospital rating was urged by the New Zealand Counties’ Association in a memorandum it submitted to the Special Parliamentary Committee on Local Government. The association advocated that hospital rates should be collected from income, salaries and wages, as is the case with social security, and that all buildings, alterations and repairs should be carried out by the Government. Till these became operative the association considered that hospital levies and hospital maintenance costs should be stabilised, that there should be a .further bona fide increase in the bed subsidy, and that hospitals with a lot of native patients should receive special financial assistance.
