MANAWATU HEADS

(From Our Own Correspondent. ) ■ The local Hall was in use eviyy night last week, dances and euchre parties following each other, half being held in aid of the Labour Party funds, and half in aid of beach improvements. All were well attended, many visitors being present and obviously having an enjoyable time. Mr Rosvall, the secretary of the association for improving the beach, and Mr Wells and Mr Smith, for the Labou* Party, were indefatigable in their efforts to ensure the pleasure and satisfaction of those attending these functions.

On Wednesday of last week and again I on Friday, it was necessary to use the Hall ' ilself instead of the supper-room, to accommodate Iho largo crowd, duo to the attendance of many visitors. The Hall was pleasantly airy and commodious, and the light good, and all those playing were in holiday mood. A visitor from Palmerston North and a resident of the district for many years, Mrs E. Rose, won the ladies' first prize on Wednesday, with almost as high points as Mrs Dnnd'o made recently. The second prize was won by Miss Wallis. Mr Anderson won the men's first prize and Mr S. Hartley the second. An innovation has boon made recently in the presenting of prizes to players who chance to occupy certain seats, called lucky seats, at the end of the games. Mr C. Hunter and Mrs Andresen were the winners. The dance held in aid of beach improvements was well attended, the floor being in excellent order. Extras were played by Mr K. Fletcher and Mr N. Bacon. A prize for the lucky Gay Gordons waf won by Able-Seaman J. Wilson and Miss V. Bavey. Miss Una Bee, of Auckland, and Mr P. Boyle, Foxton Beach, were presented with prizes for the Monte Carlo dance. Mr S. Rosvall carried out the duties of M.C.

On Friday last, the ladies' first prize for euchre was won by Mrs Hunter, and the second by Mrs J. Wass. Messrs C. Parfitt, Pratt, and Beck tied for the men's prize, Mr Pratt emerging the winner, with Mr Beck second. Consolation prizes were awarded to Mrs Paul and Mr W. A. Wall is. Parents are very grateful to thoso kindly disposed persons who have been entertaining the children both morning and afternoon, organising games and competitions, and generally giving the young folks a good time. Mr V. Andrews, of Bulls, and Mr A. Hart, of Awahuri, are at the head of the band of workers. On Thursday of last week especially parents were glad to know their children were so happily occupied. The Hall Committee gave these gentlemen the use of the Hall, and oyer sixty children, including those staying here from the Marton Children's Home, had a really wonderful time. Mrs McGregor and Miss Feasey are in charge of the 25 children hero on holiday from Marton, and are doing everything possible to give these young people a happy time. Mr Johnston, manager of the Children's Home, has shown some excellent Gospel films on Sunday evenings. He and Mrs Johnston have been attending a Maori house party near Marton.

Mrs E. M. Masters (Feilding), Mrs Tbstevin (Sanson), and Mr and Mrs Eric Green (Mar-ton) have left for home after an enjoyable week at the beach. Among campers near the new play area are Messrs D. and J. Pinker, Palmerston North; Mr and Mrs R. D. Wiekham, 'Feilding; Mr and Mrs F. Pawson, of Palmerston North; Mr and Mrs H. G. Harford and Mr and Mrs Noel Bramwell, Feilding; Mrs H. Fox, Palmerston North ; Mrs F. W. Pullyn, Palmerston North; Mr and Mrs H. W. Bell, Linton; Mr and Mrs A. Joyce, Mr and Mrs J. Pratt, and Mr J. King, of Manunui, King Country; and Mr and Mrs L. G. Chetwin, Palmerston North; Mr and Mrs J. W. Moulton, the latter from Palmerston North, and the former from Waiouru Air Force. People who have arrived at the Seabury Avenue Camp recently are Mr and Mrs C. Carter, Mr and Mrs R. Todd, Mr and Mrs A. Western, Mr and Mrs A. Proctor, Mr and Mrs J.

W. Wass and Mr and Mrs Pritchard. Miss Olwyn Dando from the Government Bookbinding Department, Wellington, and Miss 0. MePherson, Palmerston North, are guests of Mrs A. K. Dando. Mrs A. J. Jackson, Palmerston North, is visiting here. Her son, Staff-Sergeant L. Jackson, is recuperating from an attack of malaria

contracted on Bougainville Island. Mrs Jackson's daughter, Mrs F. L. Murray, is here too. Mr Murray is in the Air Force and is stationed in New Plymouth. Miss Marion Sawyer, who has been staying with her aunt, Mrs McCu'.loch, has left for a fortnight's holiday with friends in Waipukurau. A most successful dance was held here on Saturday night in aid of the local branch of the Foxton Fire Brigade. Mr Parfitt was M.O. Mrs C. F. Hereon and Mrs J. R. Evans are visiting their mother, Mrs F. H. Shorlt. The Old Year was fittingly farewel'.ed by a huge circle on the waterfront singing "Auld Lang Syne" at the witching hour of midnight, the evening being mild and moonlight.
