PAHIATUA
At the preliminary hearing of the inquest into the death of Mr Hector Scales, who died a few minutes after a collision with a motor-car on the main road just north of Mangarainoka, evidence of identification was given, while on Tuesday, when it was resumed, the Coroner (Mr S. G. Hogg) took further evidence, including the testimony of the driver and passenger of the car. Mr K. Struthors represented the next-of-kin of the cyclist and Sergeant R. J. Whiting the police. The inquest was furl her adjourned until January 18, 1945. Mr and Mrs J. Sandman are spending the Christmas holidays in tho South Island. Mr and Mrs C. Peterson, of Main Street, have Mr and Mrs J. Salt visiting them. A Christmas cake will adorn the table at the Polish children's camp at Pahiafua on Christmas Day and will bear the words, "Christina/; greetings to the Polish children, from the League of Mothers, Carterton."
Advice has been received by Mr and Mrs W. J. Mills, of Scdcole Street, that their son, Cpl. Harold P. Mills, has been wounded in action.
Mrs D. Fraser presided over a good attendance at tho December meeting of St. Paul's Ladies' Guild. Opportunity was taken to farewell Mrs Giddings, who was presented with a small gift and a shoulder spray by the president. Mrs Giddings expressed her thanks and her enjoyment of the guild afternoons. Aficrnoon tea was served by Mesdames Burr and Elmcs and competitions were won by Mrs J. Swanney and Miss J. Bcntloy. An -enjoyable luncheon was served in the Wesley Hall on Thursday where pupils of the Education Department's Correspondence School and members of the Parents' Association gathered. The president of the association (Mrs H. D. Smith) assisted by the secretary (Mrs D. Beckett) presided. Keen interest was aroused by tho high standard of the work of tho children which was on display. After luncheon, games were enjoyed and items were rendered.
