Lord Nuffield, the millionaire philanthropist, and the international cricketer, Mr Herbert Sutcliffe, have arrived in Australia, says a Sydney message.

He enlisted in the early days of the war and was taken prisoner during the lighting in North Africa several months before the Battle of El Alamein but escaped from Italv, where he and other New Zealanders had been held, when Italy laid down her arms. He made his way with two others who had gained their freedom at the same time to Switzerland; aud from there has been able to come home.

A gift of a wallet and cheque was made to Mr W. A. Curteis, headmaster of the Hamilton East School, who is retiring after 46£ years' service. Mr Curteis was educated at the Wanganui Collegiate School and began teaching at Apiti, Feilding. Later he was head teacher at Mokoia, Kakaramea, and Mangatoki, and then for six years was organising teacher in Taranaki. He became headmaster at" Hamilton East 16 years ago. While in Hamilton Mr Curteis has taken an active interest in public affairs. He served on the Borough Council for seven years and was a director of the Y.M.C.A. and secretary of the library committee. He was twice president of the Hamilton Headmasters' Association.
