MAGISTRATE'S COURT
Mr 11. I'. La wry, S.M., presided a* a silting of the Magistrate's Court yestcrdav.
A housemaid, aged 27, appeared voluntarily and pleaded guilty . to ,the. theft of articles valued at £5 9s, tho properly of A. Carey. She was convicted and admitted to probation lor two. years, and her name was suppressed. N. C. Baker (Mr Cooper) pleaded guilty to two charges of supplying liquor to a native for consumption off licenced premises. Senior-Sergeant Bonisch stressed the seriousness of supplying Maoris with liquor. In meet cases the proprietor cf the nearest hotel was blamed for pivinc them liquor and this was unfair, as it had been proved that the Maoris obtained tho liquor. some distance away. Defendant was fined £lO on the first charge and £5 on tho second.
R. Holloway, factory omployce, aged 19, who pleaded guilty to unlawfully wearing a military uniform, was' fined £3.
S. A. Carlson, contractor, of Taihape, was charged with exceeding a speed of 40 miles an hour on tho Palmerston North; Bulls highway. It was slated that he travelled at 50 miles an hour, lie was fined £2, Martin Gleeson, driver, was charged with exceeding 30 miles an hour in a restricted area. It was stated that he drove along Ecntherston Street at 40 miles an hour. A fine of £2 was imposed. S. H. Jensen, who was similarly charged, wes fined £2 for travelling along Featherston Street at 40 miles an hour. L. K. Towncnd, soldier, who was charged with driving a motor-car without due caro and attention, was fined £l. 11. C. Wntt, w''o was charged with having no tail Ho-lit on a trailer, was fined £l. C. J. Short, watchmaker (Mr Rodgers), was cherged with driving without due care and attention. Alter tho hearing of evidence, charge was amended to one of not keeping as far as practicable to the left He was lined ss. P. \V. Hood was charged with driving a motor-cycle without due care and attention and ivas fined £ll 10s. ■
