Grass Fire at Paraparaumu.

Through the efforts of a willing band of helpers with stirrup pumps and wet sacks, a large grass fire on the sand-hills adjacent to the Majestic Hotel at Paraparaumu Beach, yesterday afternoon, was extinguished before it could seriously threaten any of the adjacent houses. The men worked for over an hour. Fortunately, the wind was from the northwest. A south-westerly breeze would have confronted the fire-lighters with a heavy task in saving the houses which front the seashore just to the north of the burned area. Auckland Sales Tax Return. Reflecting the heavy sales of goods from wholesalers, manufacturers, and others to retailers during November the sales tax collected in Auckland for December was a record ior any month. The collection, amounting to £122,222, was considerably higher than the previous record monthly return of £111,807 obtained in May, 1940, and the amount of £107, 900 collected in December. 1942. For the whole of 1943, however, the sales tax collections were only £1539 greater than they were in 1942. The 1943 figure was £1,225,994 and the 1942 figure £1,224,405.
