NEW YEAR RACES

MARTON MEETING.

HURDLE RACE INCIDENT. (By “Spectator.”)

MARTON, Jan. 3.

The Marton meeting is bein ' concluded in fine and cool weather. There is n large attendance and the course is hard. , ~ , . In the Trial Plate the locally-trained Hard Frost led all the way to win easily. Ho was followed in the running by Playfellow, Hot Speech, and Dinkum Pal, and except that the latter finished third there was no change at all, these being the only ones prominent. There was a good deal of incident attached to the Tutaenui Hurdles. In the first place Maestro was an acceptor and a starter while a good deal of the betting went on. At a later stage the jockey originally engaged refused to ride the horse and a substitute rider was not acceptable to the trainer who scratched the horse and was fined £2 for a late scratching. The money invested on Maestro was refunded. The position then arose that, although there were only four runners, two dividends had to Lie paid on the place machine In the actual race Flying Spy and Bronze Night made the running to the third las fence where Bronze Night fell. Cur • tion had already come to grief and tins left two horses to fight it out t'lying Spy winning by three lengths _ from Anglo-Irish. After a chase which tasted for some minutes Bronze Night was caught and ridden in for third money. In the Junction Plate Nursery began smartest and was attended to the straight by Carthage, Bold Raid, and Dcrryogue. A furlong from the post Carthage diew clear and won easily. In a close race for second place Nursery just hold on from Bold Raid. Steadied in behind the pacemaker, Gold Quest, to the stwight, Foxcover then took charge in the Wairoma Hack Handicap and, running on much better than usual, scored a comfortable win. He was followed to the turn by Dumbo, Nordic Song, and Panamint, and of these Panamint was the only one to run on. Actually she was a little unlucky, being last *fter the field had travelled ,a furlong.

The. Ashhurst Cup was quite an interesting race and in a close finish Airport, who was a trifle unlucky cn the opening day, just beat Good Scout. When they had settled down Blue Border, Tavern Light, and Good Scout were prominent from Flying Ace and Airport. Racing to the straight Good Scout and Airport: improved their positions, and once into the straight Gtood Scout vas clear from Airport. Flying Acc, and Tavern Light, and Amigo. Airport tackled Good Scout 100 yards from home, but only secured the upper band m the filial burst. Flying Ace was third just ahead of Amigo. RACING IN DETAIL. TRIAL PLATE, of £l5O.
