MILITARY DETENTION
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, Dec. 28. Two soldiers found guilty of deserting from their units when due for embarkation for overseas service have been sentenced by a district courtmartial held near Auckland to six months' military detention. They are Troopers Leslie Townsend and Gordon George Mansfield. The court found that each accused belonged to units which had been placed on active service in New Zealand before embarkation overseas. Each had deserted with the intention of avoiding embarkation and had been absent for cigfit days, surrendering after their units had 6aiied. Each pleaded not guilty, but did not give or call evidence. The senlcnco has been confirmed and promulgated. Under tho section of the Army Act covering the offence both were liable to penal servitude. Before ' 1930 the death sentence was provided.
