CONTROVERSY SETTLED
EFFECT OF DARLAN’S DEATH. (Rec 11-40 a.rn.) LONDON, Dec, 25 Darlan’s death settles for all practical purposes the most acute political and diplomatic controversy of the war, says the Press Association’s diplomatic correspondent. His death will certainly create a happier frame of mind among many, including some ecclesiastics who regarded him as a traitor and felt that ethical objections should outweigh utilitarian advantages. Both the House of Commons and the c'ountry split over the issue of Darlan’s influence. The assassination vastly complicates American political arrango-
ments in North Africa, says the New York Times Washington correspondent. The future course of American conduct at present is in doubt, hut a strong feeling prevails that General Giraud will be chosen to succeed Darlan. Hotvever, it is emphasised that General Eisenhower is empowered to make all political airangoments in North Africa, and presumably the choice will be left in his hands.
