Mr J. A. Walsh, ’of Pahiatua, is visiting Palmerston North.
Mr E. V. Daldy, manager at Huntly of the Bank of New Zealand, has been transferred to Foxton in a similar capacity. Mr E. W. T. Thane, manager at Foxton, is to be manager at Greytown. A London cable states that MajorGeneral Hartle; deputy-commander of the United States forces in Britain, called on Mr Churchill to present him with a globe, the gift of the United States War Department and one of two specially made for presentation to President Roosevelt and Mr Churchill. The globe is 00 inches in diameter and, with its base, weighs nearly half a ton.
The immediate award of the Distinguished Flying Medal has been made to a New Zealand pilot, FlightSergeant Alwyn Metcalf, states the N.Z.E.F. official war correspondent in a cable from Cairo. Me volunteered to fly a torpedo-carrying aircraft when he had already carried out 38 bombing sorties against the enemy. In a night attack on a merchant ship with a destroyer, escort Sergeant Metcalf’s aircraft was hit by an anti-aircraft shell and two of his crew Were wounded. Handing over the controls to liis second pilot, Sergeant Metcalf attended to the wounded men. On arrival back at the base he landed his machine successfully, despite the fact that his undercarriage mechanism had been damaged and one wheel would not come down.
