Farmers’ Working Clothes.

The shortage of working clothes for farmers was stressed by several members at a recent meeting of the executive of the Pahiatua branch of the farmers’ union. One member ejaculated: “We can’t possibly obtain working clothes” Petrol and Tyres. According to the former Minister of Transport (Mr Semple) action taken to save petrol and tyres has resulted in an actual saving of 25,500,000 vehicle miles. This saving represents approximately 2.500.000 gallons of petrol and over 6000 comiincrcial tyres. | Fewer Bankruptcies. Bankruptcies have shown a steady decline in New Zealand in the past ■five years, according to Abstract of Statistics figures. To Celebrate Peace. A healthy credit balance was revealed in the financial report presented at the annual meeting of the Paraparaumu Beautifying Society, and it was decided that this should be held more or less as a fund for assisting a large planting scheme to celebrate peace when it comes. The membership of the society now stands at 212, including 12 life members. Motor-cyclist Injured. A taxi driven by Mrs E. E. Macgregor, and a motor-cycle ridden by Air G. H. Searfe, of Feilding, were involved in a collision at the intersection of Heretaunga and Featherston Streets, Palmerston North, yesterday morning. As a result, Mr Searfe, who is a married man, was admitted to hospital where he is on the seriously ill list with a broken leg and concussion. Collection of Ergot. Last year’s campaign for the col- 1 lection of ergot resulted in over one ton being received by the Department of Agriculture, and except for n small lot reserved for use in New Zealand, all the ergot has been shipped to the United Kingdom. The Minister of Agriculture states that the collection of ergot will not be undertaken during the coming season. Young people might be called on to make another effort in the following season, but supplies were not being called for at present. A Marked Contrast. The apparent attitude of the National Service Department in permitting a military defaulter seven days’ leave to visit his home was roundly condemned at a meeting of the Dunedin Returned Services’ Association. It was reported that the man was one of four brothers, all in a detention camp. In a letter to the association headquarters asking for an investigation, the local association said the privilege was in striking contrast to leave of one day and a half granted an airman from the same little township. Liquor With Meals. | A decision of considerable interest to hotel proprietors and licensees was given by Mr Goulding,. The I police alleged that an infringement lof the regulations occurred when ! guests at a dinner of the Institute of [Automotive Engineers at the hotel 'on December 2 remained in the din-ing-room till 9.45 p.nt. with liquor on the tables and some in glasses, all of ithe liquor having been ordered and J placed on the tables before 8 p.m. No permit, the police stated, had been obtained from them under Section 164 of the licensing Act. The police laid the information on the grounds that the licensee, contrary to the re- ! gelations, permitted the consumption of the liquor after the hours allowed by law.
