THE TOWN CLOCK.

(To the Editor )

Sir, —I have read in your paper of a proposal the City Council is considering to erect the clock in the new council buildings. Doubt is expressed as to whether the chimes could be included. The proposal is quite a good idea, but I am sure that the citizens of Palmerston North would be very disappointed if the chimes were left out. When this world war is over no doubt there will be a desire to erect some memorial to our fallen sailors, soldiers, and airmen, and I suggest that a most suitable memorial -would be a clock tower erected, say, in one of the Square enclosures* in which the clock and chimes complete could be placed, providing of course this cannot be done in the council buildings.—l am, etc., CITIZEN.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —Might I suggest, since the town clock is regarded as the property of the citizens of Palmerston North, that a tower to house same, and erected in the Square gardens, be considered by .the City Council. If this procedure were accepted the chimes could be included in the scheme. A young country, New Zealand lacks fountains, statues, towers, and many other beautiful works of art, famiiiar and loved by visitors to older lands. After the Hawke's Ray earthquake of 1931 the Hastings Borough Council, faced with a similar problem, erected a tower to house the Post Office clock, thus solving its difficulty. Bearing in mind that publicspirited citizens purchased and presented the clock to the people of this city, I venture the opinion that present day citizens would be quite prepared to subscribe to the retention of the clock and chimes along the lines I have indicated. I would further express the hope that, provided this proposal finds favour with the council, an opportunity he presented to subscribe to the clock fund. This could he done by private canvass or by paying subscriptions to the council office.—l am, etc., C.T.
