The War Office is taking action to investigate a statement by the Japanese that the Lisbon Mara, carrying 1800 British and Australian prisoners to Japan, was sunk by a submarine in the China Sea on October 1. The survivors are said to be on the way to Japan. The War Office has asked the protecting Power to confirm this report and obtain the names of the prisoners as roon as possible.—Official Wireless. President Roosevelt has received from industrial ship workers at Pearl Harbour Navy Yard 75,000 dollars by means of a cheque written on a fragment of a wing-flap of a Japanese piano shot down on December 7. The accompanying letter asks that the money, representing Labour Day wages, be used to assure the continuance of the American way of life.
