AN ITALIAN CLAIM
(Rec. 12 noon) LONDON, Oct. 6. The Rome radio claims that an Italian submarine sank an American battleship of the Mississippi class about 300 miles west of the African coast and abreast of Freetown, Sierra Leone. Four torpedoes hit the ship, which was seen to sink.
The Navy Department in Washington declined to comment on the Italian claim.
