SYDNEY, Sept. 19. A man who for eight years was an Anglican archdeacon is now Commanding an Australian warship.. His officers and men call him tlie Fighting Archdeacon. In the last war he served in a British cruiser squadron, and when peace came lie went to New Zealand and joined the Church. At Munich time lie saw War was inevitable and asked if the British Navy -would recall him to the active list. The answer was in the negative. A year ago the Royal Australian Navy offered him an appointment and he jumped at it. He. is now in charge of one of Australia’s newest war vessels. At the traditional Navy Sunday devotions, usually a 10 or 15 minute job, his men say he “gives them the works” —a full service with three or fotir hvmns and a man-size sermon.
