SHOOTING AND FISHING
Mr R. Procter presided at a meeting of tho Palmerston North sub-branch of tho Wellington Acclimatisation Society. In his report the raDgor (Mr T. Andrews) expressed concern at the number of ducks’ nests destroyed and eggs removed bv marauding schoolboys. It was decided to write to the headmasters of schools in the vicinity of certain river sanctuaries, explaining the seriousness of tho matter. It was pointed out that no trout fry were available this season, and as there were no hatcheries in operation it was not likely that yearling fish would bo liberated. “The society should do all in its power to maintain a supply of trout in our rivers,” said Mr Ware, “and I hope that some method will bo evolved whereby we may replenish the numbers of trout which are bound to dwindle after the coming season.” The ranger was of the opinion I hat the coming season would be a good one, there being much spawn in the river and no very heavv floods.
